Luthier Mateo Rufini is a builder of many fine handmade stringed instruments in Italy. He builds everything from violins to classical guitars and of course his own line of Electrics. This is his newest design and the second built of his Zyco Deluxe, solid body model. The Zyco is a Rufini original design with a single cutaway, ribcage cut away and easy access to the upper frets.
The body has a matt, Magpie Blue finish (a dark teal color) with open pores, so you can see the grain of the wood. The neck is made of one-piece European AAA Flame Maple. The gold anodized brushed aluminum guard looks classy and modern against the metallic, open pore finished body. The guitar uses a Mastery hardtail / chopped Tele-style bridge with two intonated nickel-plated brass saddles for some real snap and bite. You can load the strings through the back or the bridge.
The hand-wound pickups by Valenti in Italy sound beautiful. The neck is a thick yet focused P-90 and the bridge is a Humbucking Gold-Foil pickup. It has lots of spank and a nice crisp top-end with a lively mid-range bite . It can overdrive a tube-amp nicely, while still retaining a bell-like Fullerton CA kind of tonal vibe. The pickups are wired like a Tele with a 3-way switch. There is also a mini slide-switch that reverses the phase of the P-90; giving the middle and neck positions an out of phase Strat-like tone when engaged,
The Zyco has a chunky 50's Tele type of neck profile. It's a fat C shape with comfortable, pronounced shoulders. Â Â Â
As always with Rufini Guitars, the build quality is very high and the guitar plays effortlessly. Currently setup with NYXL 10-46 strings with a nice low action of 3 & 4 64ths of an inch at the 12th fret, High E to Low E.
