Before becoming the exquisite luthier that he is today, Adriano Sergio livedmany lives as a navy seal, furniture maker, professional bassist, and touringroad tech for many rock giants. Upon picking up one of his beautiful musicalcreations, you can feel Adriano's passion in each hand carved line and curve. The AÇORES has a definite artful and modern aesthetic, however Adriano'sapproach to instrument building is very "Old-World" in the truestsense. His preferred method of building is by starting from scratch with eachnew model. Making jigs and witling away with a knife and other hand-tools untilhe reaches perfection. Each new model is a limited build with only a smallnumber of pieces made. This particular example features a highly figured Alpine Maple top and Spanish Cedar sides and back.
The AÇORES is a fully hollow and carved Archtop that works for a large varietyof playing styles. From finger picking, flat-picking, Jazz, Avant-Garde music, Country,Gypsy Jazz and even heavier styles as the unique bracing pattern allows thisguitar to not only sound great overdriven but excel in that tonal realm. When introducinggain to the AÇORES the whole guitar opens up beyond what is imaginable. Whenyou find the sweet spot on your amp these guitars have interesting sustain elementswith single notes, much like using an E-Bow. This type of liveliness is what blewus away upon first picking up Ergon’s work. You can expect a fast percussiveresponse and long piano-like sustain despite the carved top and hollow-body construction. The AÇORES acoustic voice is more like a Flat-top than Archtop. Very open with evennote separation and a nice woody tone with great highs, mids and powerful lows. With a clean amp, you can expect a warm, complex, open and inviting tonal palate. The pickup is a custom hand wound Häussel(Germany) mini humbucker with tons of liveliness and presence.
This model is equipped with a sound-port at the bass side. Looking inside ofthe instrument is just as fascinating as looking at the outside. The workmanshipis extremely clean and carved to perfection. Next to the sound port, you will finda master volume and master tone for the pickup with hand carved knobs made of ebony. The top of this particular example is carved out of Alpine Maple while theback, sides and neck are all lightweight Spanish Cedar. A lovely combination. The finish is a mix of Oil and Wax.
Playability wise, these are some of the smoothest and most effortlessinstruments we’ve ever experienced. The AÇORES features a zero-fret and ebony string guide which keepsthe action at the optimal height in first position. You will never over press onthe first fret and go sharp like on many guitars with a standard nut. The restof the neck tapers in a uniform way that keeps the action in the sweet spot allthe way up the board. The truss rod and tailpiece are both adjustable to achievethe correct break angle, no matter what gauge strings you use. On top of gettinga masterfully handcrafted instrument of the highest quality, Ergon Guitars areone of a kind works of functional art that you can cherish and be inspired byfor a lifetime.
