Dean Gordon Guitars Chelsea Hotelecaster # 12 This is a gorgeous example of Dean Gordon's work and a true piece of "playable history". Dean has been working in the Chelsea NY area of NYC for many years as a repair tech and in-demand custom guitar builder/Luthier. The building this guitars body is built from has more historic significance than we can fit into this description. So for starters, The Chelsea Hotel was built between 1883 and 1885 and opened to the public in 1885. When first built it was the tallest building in NYC. Many of the worlds most famous celebrities and musicians from the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Andy Warhol and Mark Twain, just to name a few have resided there over the course of their careers. It's impossible to know from who's room this guitar is built out of, but that is part of the mystery and fun of these limited edition Dean Gordon guitars. Many a great songs have been written about and in the Chelsea Hotel by the worlds most treasured bands and songwriters. Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel" for example. As of August 1, 2011, the Chelsea hotel has stopped taking reservations in order to begin renovations. Dean has been able to get some incredible pieces of this historic buildings Civil War Era White Pine, in order to build these very special new heirloom quality guitars.
This LTD Edition Chelsea Hotelecaster # 12 in particular has an extremely resonant and woody voice, full of harmonic complexities, hard to find in a brand new guitar. It also plays with ease and is a nice light weight, of only 7lbs 4.3oz. This guitar features a very comfy Med C profile neck with a 10"-12" compound radius. The neck is sprayed with pure Nitro in a translucent black stain, which accentuates the beautiful grain pattern. The pickups in this DG Hotelecaster are built by one of the finest hand-wound pickup manufactures around McNelly Pickups. They are 10% overwound Sparkletrons for a hotter tone, while still retaining that Filtertron sparkle and chime they are known to produce, but with a more aggressive sound when overdriving an amp.
