The Frank Brothers Sonar is one of those instruments that feels quietly dialed-in the moment you pick it up. There’s nothing overstated about it, yet every detail reflects a deep level of intention and craftsmanship. It’s a guitar that doesn’t try to impress on first glance, but ends up revealing more the longer you spend with it.
This particular build, finished in Olive Drab over Tobacco Sunburst, has a depth that sets it apart from a standard solid color. The heavy relic full gloss nitro gives it a broken-in feel right out of the case, with natural wear patterns that complement the understated, almost utilitarian character of the finish. The vintage amber neck and stripped shaft add to that sense of age and familiarity without feeling forced.
Tonally, the triple Firebird pickup configuration offers a unique and highly usable palette. There’s a tight, focused low end, a clear and present midrange, and a top end that stays articulate without becoming brittle. The 5-way switching paired with the MOD plate expands the range even further, giving you access to everything from chimey, open textures to thicker, more compressed tones when needed. It’s an incredibly versatile setup that still maintains a strong, consistent voice.
The quartersawn maple neck with a soft V carve sits comfortably in the hands, with just enough shape to feel substantial without slowing you down. Combined with the 9.5" radius and Jescar fretwire, it strikes a great balance between vintage feel and modern playability.
As with all Frank Brothers instruments, the build quality here is exceptional. From the finish work to the fretwork to the overall feel, everything comes together in a way that makes this an inspiring and reliable piece to reach for.
