OOPEGG Guitars are hand crafted in Japan by a small team of luthiers with an eye for design. From the moment you pick up this instrument it's clear that OOPEGG takes their craft very seriously. The feel, playability, tones and build quality are all top-notch. The Trailbreaker MK-I reminds us a lot of retro-style, vintage Japanese built guitars from the 1960's; with their unique switching options, offset body design and vibrato system. The major difference is in the superior build quality and modern-day features, making them versatile and gig ready guitars right out of the case.
This particular MK-I features three pickups by Magneto Design Lab in North Carolina. Two Humbuckers and a mildly hot Single-Coil middle pickup. You also have some of the best hardware around. A bridge by Halon in Greece and a vibrato by Descendant in the USA. This pairing makes for a responsive and touch sensitive experience without the downside of falling out of the bridge's saddles, like with many vintage offset guitars of yesteryear. This is due to the grooved bridge design and the grooves in the Descendant Vibrato that allow the strings to go beneath its plate for a larger break angle than vintage offset vibrato units. See pics.
Many tonal possibilities are at your disposal with the options to use any two or three pickups together or any pickup you choose by itself. The mini-toggle 3-way switch on the control plate has these three options: 1st position middle pickup off, 2nd position middle pickup on, 3rd position middle pickup alone. Then you also have a standard three-way pickup selector switch for the two humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions. The push-pull tone pot has a built-in passive filter in the upward position, allowing for even further tone sculpting capabilities. When engaged the filter mellows out the guitars overall tone for a near acoustic-like response.
The Trailbreaker MK-I has a comfortable and beautiful 5-ply neck made of Maple and American Walnut, adding further stability and stiffness to the design. The fingerboard is made of Indian Rosewood. You'll also notice the unique neck plate area which allows you easy access to the neck's upper registers. This guitar is also of a very nice weight and balances perfectly both seated or standing with a strap.
