Luthier Mateo Rufini is a builder of many fine handmade stringed instruments in Italy. He builds everything from violins to classical guitars and of course his own line of Electrics.
This is his newest design named the Zyco Custom (solid body model). The Zyco is a Rufini original design with a single cutaway, ribcage cut away and easy access to the upper frets. The body has a matt, “Bianco Neve” (Snow White) finish with open pores, so you can see the grain of the wood. The neck is made of European AAA Birdseye Maple w/ a AAA Birdseye Maple slab fingerboards. The anodized brushed aluminum guard looks classy and modern against the open pore body finish. The guitar uses a hardtail / chopped Tele-style bridge with intonated brass saddles for some real snap and bite.
The Rufini hand-wound pickups sound beautiful. The neck pickup is a thick yet focused P-90 and the bridge is a PAF style Humbucker with Gold-Foil mesh for aesthetics only. It has lots of spank and a nice crisp top-end with a lively mid-range bite. It can overdrive a tube-amp nicely.
The pickups are wired like a Tele with a 3-way switch. There is also a mini slide-switch that reverses the phase of the P-90; giving the middle position an out of phase Strat-like tone when engaged,
This Zyco has a med chunky 50's Fullerton CA type of neck profile, with comfortable and pronounced shoulders. As always with Rufini Guitars, the build quality is very high and the guitar plays effortlessly. Currently setup with NYXL 10-46 gauge strings and a nice low action of 3 & 4 64ths of an inch at the 12th fret, High E to Low E.
