UMA Guitars are a team of two Luthiers Simon and Jonas, who reside and build high-quality handmade electric guitars in Ghent, Belgium, with great attention to detail and an eye for design.
Simon studied the art of building stringed instruments at the conservatory of Ghent. His focus at the time was mainly in violin building, though he didn’t find building violins as satisfying as he had hoped. After graduating, he soon gravitated towards Archtop guitars and building parts for other guitar manufacturers. As part of the local jazz scene and a hobby jazz guitar player himself, his interest soon became more focused on building new electric solid body guitars.
Jonas began his studies at the International Luthier school of Antwerp, where he learned the art of building guitars. In that period, he built many flamenco and Gypsy Jazz/Selmer style guitars. Upon graduating he soon began an apprenticeship with very well-regarded Luthier Daniele Chiesa, where he learned the ins and outs of guitar building. Simon and Jonas met through word of mouth and they began sharing a workshop together. This is where they developed the design for the Jetson model, under their new brand name Uma Guitars.
The Jetson is a six string, solid-body set-neck electric guitar, with a unique slightly offset waist that balances effortlessly both seated and or standing. The guitar features a single Mojo Pickups UK Dual-Foil or two Strat Size Gold Foils on the Jetson 2. The Humbucking Gold-Foil pickup can be split and wired in many ways and is attached to three slide switches on the beautiful anodized aluminum pickguard. The lines of the body and guard are graceful and classy, while appearing ultra-modern in a particularly tasteful way. On the Jetson 2, versitility is the name of the game. Two Strat size Gold-Foil pickups as well as a Piezo pickup (Available in single pickup model as well) give you plenty of options to fine tune your tone.
This Jetson guitar features a “Concrete Grey” matte Nitro finish that is so light, it seeps into the one-piece Swamp Ash’s body, so that you can feel and see the woods grain.
On this particular Jetson, Simon and Jonas were striving to achieve building an instrument with a base neck pickup type of tone, that can be altered by the switches. Using the Series/Parallel switch, you can achieve a mild-output airy and articulate almost single-coil like neck pickup tone or a much higher output darker sound in series, that is great for pushing your tube amp into overdrive.
Get inspired! The Jetson and new Jetson 2 are now available at South Shore Guitar Boutique.
